Individual traffic & Rules

Individual traffic in Vienna corresponds to a bustling European city. Hectic and tight during peak hours, otherwise loosend up and quickly, but always ordered and mostly disciplined.

In the city a top speed of 50 km / h applies on the motorway 80 km / h, unless any special traffic sign orders a speed restriction.

Environmental zones in Vienna there are none.

In recent years, Vienna was covered with a dense network of short-term parking, which is not even clear or easy to understand for the Viennese population. In most Viennese districts are limited parking zones, and in some not even single roads are partially limited parking zones and then not again.

In short-term parking zones, permits must be completed and put inside the car at the front window. The permits must be purchased in tobacco shops and are available for parking times from 30 minutes to 2 hours.  Since the maximum parking time is thus limited to 2 hours, which is often not enough especially for visits, we recommend vehicles (cars) turn off in parking garages.

Parking of vehicles in limited parking zones without a valid parking permit is currently punished with € 36,-. More information on Vienna's short-term parking is available at:  http://www.wien.gv.at/verkehr/parken/.

Information on the short-term parking zones in each district, fee times of the day and sources for purchase, see: http://www.parkeninwien.at/Kurzparken.html.

Take care by parking your car especially not to park hindering traffic, among others also not to park the car at house corners when the car stands above the corner of the building. In such cases your car can be put away, what leads to significant costs and loss of time.

Within the belt, and especially in the city center (center) you will encounter a confusing network of one-way streets and find parking space just by luck. Here again, we recommend (car drivers) to go to a central parking garage and perform from there your sightseeing on foot.

A list of parking garages in Vienna you find at: http://www.parkeninwien.at/Parkgaragen-in-Wien.html.

Basically, in Austria the legally allowed maximum limit alcohol in the blood is less than 0.5 per mille. In certain cases (up to the age of 20 years, driving license test, training and exercise, trips, etc.), this limit is reduced to 0.1 per mil or less. About 0.5 per mille of alcohol in the blood, it is really expensive (300, - to 3.700, -) and about 0.8 parts per thousand driving license will be revoked. This should be especially respected before visits in wine taverns! Even when cycling, there is a limit of less than 0.8 per mille alcohol content in the blood and severe penalties for violations (from 800, - to 5.900, -).
