History of Vienna in time-lapse

Based on findings that demonstrate the colonization of the territory of present Vienna in the Old Stone Age and the Bronze Age, the story of Vienna began about 4.000 years ago. In the first century AD the Romans built at the area of todays first district of Vienna, their settlement Vindobona, as a military station with an attached civilian city.

In the year 881, the first mention of the name of the city took place, around 1200 Vienna´s city walls were built and in the year 1221 Vienna got the municipal rights. Even if Vienna was a successfull trading center before, from there a continuous rise and expansion of the urban area began.

In 1438 Vienna became the seat of the Holy Roman Empire and 1558, after the division of the Habsburg dynasty, the capital of the Holy Roman Empire. Two Turkish sieges and the 30-year war, troubled Vienna in the 17th and 18th century and the troops of Napoleon took Vienna in the 19th century twice.

Subsequently Vienna experienced during the reign of Emperor Franz Joseph I. a unprecedented heyday in architecture, arts and economically, the lasts until the 1. World War.

With the 1. World War and the subsequent Great Depression began a - in every sense - dark time, that reached its lowest point at the 2. World War.

Then began an extensive reconstruction, whereby in spite of all the hardship largely consideration was put on recontruction of historical buildings, so that Vienna could rise again to its former glory. Today Viennna is a European City with about 1.757 Mio. citizens, with historical and modern districts and above all one of the safests towns worldwide.
